Unspoken: Poems of Love and Memory

An Invitation Unanswered

About this poem

An Invitation Unanswered explores the quiet ache of reaching out to someone from the past, only to be met with silence. Rather than dwelling on rejection, the poem reflects on the transformative power of courage, forgiveness, and emotional growth. It contrasts one heart that chooses healing with another that remains imprisoned by pride, resentment, and unresolved wounds. Ultimately, it is a meditation on maturity, the realization that unanswered invitations often reveal more about the one who remains silent than the one who dared to extend a hand.

I sent you a gentle message, twice.
I even invited you to unfurl your soul
for a graceful new beginning
through friendship,
a quiet door where the heavy past
could surrender
to the untrodden path of tomorrow.

But you chose the weapon of silence,
wielding it from afar,
a wound deeper than any sword could carve.

Many autumns have passed,
Many seasons have faded then returned
A lifetime seems to have flowed beneath the bridge
The sun has set a thousand times since then.

Yet have you not bloomed?
Have you not grown or transformed?

Decades have reshaped the world,
yet you still cling to our past
like a poisoned gift,
your resentment burning
with the fury of an eternal fire.

You guard old wounds
behind the walls of vanity and wounded pride,
too reluctant to let them drift into the wind.

Alas, you never learned
to soften disappointment,
to accept rejection
or to face the storm
allow it to carve its wisdom into you.

It is hard to believe that, as the years gather upon you,
your heart remains emotionally frozen.

While I chose courage,
I chose growth,
I chose to send a beam of warmth
across the dark, vast ocean of days
that lay between us.

Your silence does not diminish me,
nor does it prove I am unworthy.

It only reveals
how far I have traveled toward maturity,
and the distance
you could not bring yourself to cross.

While I moved forward,
you remained bound
to the shadows of yesterday.
