Butterfly and the Lion

About this poem

Butterfly and the Lion is a story of an unexpected connection between two lab partners whose ordinary first meeting became an extraordinary memory. Inspired by the quiet chemistry between two different souls, the poem explores unspoken feelings, timing, distance, and the lasting imprint of a bond that was never forgotten.
Like a butterfly drawn to the warmth of a lion, their connection represents the beauty of contrast, curiosity meeting confidence, gentleness meeting strength, and two hearts recognizing something rare before life carried them in different directions.
This poem is a tribute to the connections that leave a permanent mark on the heart, even when time and distance change the path.

An empty room where sits a notebook labeled Butterfly. Sunlight pours through the windows, illuminating a single golden butterfly drifting toward the open door. Outside, a faint silhouette of a lion formed from sunlight watches from the distance—not threatening, but quietly protective. The room is empty, yet it feels full of memories, as though two hearts had just left moments before..

On our very first day in the lab,
she listened closely to the TA's instructions.
Quietly, he walked in
and chose the station beside hers
for the rest of the quarter.

It was an ordinary meeting,
yet something extraordinary began.
Like air feeding fire,
like an enzyme finding its substrate;
a perfect lock-and-key fit.

He was a charismatic Leo,
equal parts magician and mischief.
She was a Gemini—
chirpy, curious, and quietly shy.
Curiosity met warmth,
and neither would ever be quite the same.

He found endless ways to make her laugh.
Captivated by her spirit,
he called her Butterfly.
In her absence, he searched for peace.
She missed him
like rain on a sweltering summer night.

Their chemistry felt strangely fated.
A quiet, passionate attraction
grew between them.
Neither spoke the words
their hearts already knew.
Guarded souls make silent lovers.

One day, life called her to another town.
He saw her one last time.
He looked sad, frustrated, almost angry.
"The timing of your departure is wrong," he said.

Only years later
did she realize he was saying,
Don't leave me yet.

He left an imprint upon her heart
that time could never erase.
She searched for him through the years,
cried for what might have been,
and quietly closed the door to romance forever.

To her, theirs was a sacred connection;
a beautiful memory
to cherish for the rest of her life.
