without ever needing
you to love me back.

I have loved you

even when you became reluctant
to bridge the distance between us.

I have loved you

when you were with me, yet lost,
present in body
but distant in soul.

I have loved you

even when I had to fly away,
as graduation called me
away from the campus,
and you resented my leaving.

I have loved you

even when you left me
without a word.

I have loved you

through two decades
of your absence.

And I have loved you

when silence
was all I received from you.

Through leaving,
across distance,
through your absence,
and in silence,
I have loved you.

And I still love you,

even knowing
that we may never
find our way back to each other.
