My Other Half, His Majesty

About this poem

My Other Half, His Majesty is a darkly romantic poem about the mysterious presence of a beloved who feels less like a stranger and more like a part of the soul.

He is the king hidden within the heart, powerful, passionate, and untamed. To love him is to open a door that may never close, to discover a force that can both enchant and destroy.

This poem explores the beautiful danger of loving someone so deeply that they become part of who you are.

An oval portrait framed by rough charcoal sketches on parchment captures a central figure unlatching a heavy wooden door. The figure’s chest fractures open like a glowing furnace, revealing an ornate cage embedded deep within the ribs. Inside the cage stands a miniature, crowned lion with glowing eyes.

A searing orb of living fire and solar flares bursts directly from the caged lion's jaws, roaring outward toward the viewer. Wisps of smoke, fiery cinders, and dark thorned vines weave across the chest, contrasting the deep shadowy hues of the background with the vivid, blinding orange and yellow light of the sun-like flame.

If you ever ask me
who the other half is,
the one who breathes beneath my skin,
the stranger I call home.

I will tell you:

His Majesty rests
in a cage within my heart.
He is the king,
my beloved emperor.

But if I let him out,
he will not greet you.
He will roar,
hurl a sun at you,
a ball of living fire
meant to unmake you.

You are opening a door
you cannot close.
You are leaning in
to hear what you cannot unhear.

The risk, my dear,
is yours.
Truly.
