Unspoken: Poems of Love and Memory

The Weight of What We Almost Were

About this poem

This poem reflects on a love that ended not because affection was absent, but because two people envisioned life differently. It explores the painful realization that love alone cannot change another person's values, ambitions, or choices. Spanning years of separation, regret, and reflection, the poem examines the lasting impact of unrealized potential, the quiet compassion that survives heartbreak, and the courage to let go while carrying unanswered words in the heart.

Life once gave me a strange kind of love
that ended in nothing but conversations
before I left for a long journey abroad.
There was no shared future,
no clear map of tomorrow,
not even a proper goodbye
to seal that unfinished romantic chapter.

The reason it failed was simple —
our values never aligned.

I wished the man I loved
to hold his head high
like an eagle soaring across the sky—
through education
through work
through the quiet dignity of independence.

I dreamed he would grow into his potential
and one day ask for my hand in marriage
with our parents’ blessings.

I was not wrong to hope.
Such choices must rise from within.
Love cannot carve a path for another soul
nor turn wishing into becoming.

Sometimes the deepest grief
is not losing someone
but realizing they never became
who you believed they could be.

And so he remained
outside the future I had imagined.

Life after that did not unfold gently.
It scattered into uncertainty
into something difficult to name.
Losing me cut him deeply
so he chose to hurt me carefully.

He found a scholar girl in his town
and married her in a secret ceremony
closing our chapter completely.

I told myself I was fine.
I abandoned the dream of being his wife
and moved on with my life.

With the passage of time
I weathered many ups and downs
yet never let myself forget the sand dunes.

Now both our paths are tangled and heavy.
My tarot cards show him searching for peace and stability
after suddenly leaving his wife
plunged into legal chaos and emotional storm.

He sent me another proposal after the divorce
but I was lost in my own struggles and responsibilities.

With a heavy heart
I drew a firm boundary
and let him go.

I imagine him still searching
for something steady to hold onto.
Here I remain far away
unable to reach out
afraid of his lingering anger
his resentment
and the sharp words he may still carry.

My heart bleeds with unspoken thoughts of him
yet I keep this careful distance
this watchful silence
while everything unsaid aches to be heard.

Now we both live
in different kinds of brokenness.

All I want to tell him is this:
His mistakes
his reluctance to grow
and the choices he made
carved a deep mark upon my life.
They shaped the loneliness I have carried for years
the quiet sorrow that still lingers in my heart
and the heavy weight of what we almost were
